Great knife; a pocket-sized (and weighted) 110

 1) small in size as mentioned above ( but still large enough for reasonable use) 2) light weight 3) very slim profile 4) not "tactical" looking 5) US made This turns out to be harder than one might imagine. Knives tend to be too large, or too military looking for polite use, or most dreadfully made "offshore". Enter the "55". I have long been a fan of buck knives and have a deep respect for the fact that they manage to produce a high quality product in the US while keeping their prices very reasonable

 The good news is that the knife arrived and fits my parameters perfectly; it is small, light, handsome with brass bolsters and polished rose wood scales, but alas the blade was completely dull. I am not a stickler for the sharpness of a knife when it arrives, as I have high standards for sharpness and also understand that you need to be willing to work with a blade over its life. However the 55 that I receive appeared unfinished, the blade seems to have received the the first shaping grind, but none of the subsequent polishing or sharpening grinds, I had to work for 20 minutes on a grinding stone to get the primary bevel in place and another 10 minutes of work before it would cut paper. Once that happened the knife was perfect, I was just a bit surprised and disappointed that this one snuck out the door of the buck factory essentially as an unfinished item

 Like it's big brother, the 55 is superb workmanship, and incredibly sharp. It's very lightweight, but also striking in simplicity and beauty. I find myself not wanting to have this in my pocket everyday, but on occasion, so as not to age it too quickly, but then again, at only around $30, it's easily replaced. I can't say this any more positively than this: If you need a single blade, locking pocket knife, sharp enough to skin deer or whatever, buy this knife! You will love it!

I like the knife, however fit and finish on the scales could be better. The blade arrived with a burr, almost seems like they didn't finish sharpening it.

First off if you are not use to carrying a knife every day don't get an expensive knife right of the bat if you lose it you feel like crap and you don't have a backup. Get a couple of good inexpensive ones first like, Spyderco Centofante 3, Kershaw Chill, or Kershaw Skyline All of which I have carried for over 5 years. After a while go for the Benchmade 940, Microtech, or  Zero Tolerance.

First time knife buyer, what should I get?

  The blade steel is good. Came pretty sharp. Had a nice comfortable weight to it. But it's pin construction, as stated in the description

 Then the silver palladium accent on the handle began to tarnish. Which surprised me as I didn't particularly use this knife recklessly or let it sit dirty.  I'm less than fond of the handle material as it's not particularly grippy, and the design is only on one side of it. And its locking mechanism is a little difficult to access

 It'll be a bit cheaper and overall better quality and more usefulness.  Not as flashy, but in my opinion a better blade.

Good knife, just minor flaws.

 The blade is particularly thin (certainly nothing I would want to do any wood chopping with) but don't let that deceive you VG10 is plenty strong and wouldn't have any trouble with slicing. And speaking of slicing- the hollow ground blade is easy to maintain and does slice very well. Holds an edge adequately. The FRN is acceptable but not overly "grippy" and I wont use it in water seeing that not only would the smooth FRN be slick and the construction is riveted (so if I get salt water in there is no way to dry it by disassembly)
